StoryInnovation Planning Canvas

What Is Storyboarding?

In the previous lesson, you learned observation skills to help you gather important details for your story. You also learned that it is important for journalists to visualize their story as though it were a movie, looking at it from different angles and perspectives.

Storyboarding is a technique that journalists can use to help them make better observations. In this lesson, you will build on those techniques by creating a visual outline of your story. A storyboard is a simple sketch that shows how you might organize your story.

Perhaps you have watched extras for movies where actors and directors show a behind-the-scenes view of how the movie was made. Often movie directors use storyboards to visualize what scenes might look like. This helps them to imagine key moments in the script so they have a better plan when they film. This can save time and money in production.

Download the Storyboard Canvas and examples and then after you’ve completed your storyboard, enter the discussion using the button below and upload your storyboard, explaining your approach. Check back and comment on one or two storyboards from other students and give them feedback.
